ATS-conscious CVs

“ATS” means the software some employers use to store and search applications. It is not a judge of your career. It is a database that sometimes fails to read a clever layout.

CV4Free does not claim your PDF will pass every parser. No honest tool can. What you can do is avoid the things that routinely break: text in images, tables used as a page grid, icons instead of words, two-column puzzles, and headings the employer will not search for.

What “ATS-conscious” means here

• One main column of text.
• Headings a human would type: Work experience, Education, Skills.
• High contrast, no pale grey body text.
• A real name, city, phone and email as text — not a header image.

The Essential look is built that way. The US product sample uses it on Letter paper, which is what most US forms expect.

What to write

Use the words in the job post when they are true. If they asked for SQL and you use SQL, write SQL — not “data wrangling”. Do not paste the posting into your summary. Do not hide keywords in white text. That is a trick parsers and humans both dislike.

Dates as years or month+year are enough. Unusual date glyphs and text boxes are not.

Photos, sidebars, and modern looks

A sidebar is harder for some parsers than a single column. A photo is wasted on a US online form and can hurt. If you are applying through a Gulf portal that shows the PDF to a person the same day, a clearer visual look can still be the right choice. Match the channel, not a global myth about ATS.

After you download

Open the PDF and try to select the text. If you cannot select a heading, a parser will not read it either. CV4Free’s download is real text in a PDF, not a picture of a page — unless something went wrong, in which case download again.

Create a CV and start on Essential if the application is a website with a parse step. You can switch looks later without rewriting your words.
